A condition of hyperpigmentation, typically symmetrical and often on the face, melasma is a common skin problem. It is often characterized by brown to gray-brown patches on the face and frequently is caused by pregnancy. Epidemiologic research estimates the global prevalence of melasma among the general population at about 1%. Among higher-risk populations, it is between 9% and 50%. The condition is benign and may resolve on its own but may be concerning to some patients. Many over-the-counter treatments and other common behaviors can worsen the condition, making good communication with patients essential.
