Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most prevalent subtype of PN that is potentially caused by a broad range of clinical pathologies. Patients with DPN often present with tingling, numbness, and/or burning in the extremities in varying degrees, which can lead to significant complications. Although the precise cause of DPN is unknown, genetic factors; mechanical compression, such as carpal tunnel syndrome; and social and lifestyle factors, such as smoking and chronic alcohol consumption, have been implicated. As common as DPN is, prevention provides a framework for any approach to treatment. However, fewer than one third of patients with DPN achieve satisfactory pain control.
