More than 2.5 million new HIV infections occur yearly worldwide in the absence of an effective vaccine. Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with antiretroviral medications have been widely recognized as a critical piece of primary prevention for individuals with ongoing risk for HIV infection. Followed correctly, PrEP is highly effective, decreasing the risk for HIV infection through injection drug use by at least 74% and infection through sex up to 99%. However, in the United States, only 25% of those who would benefit from PrEP treatment are using it. Although global PrEP uptake has increased since 2018, "considerable scope for further rises in numbers of PrEP users" remains, according to the World Health Organization.
