Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Both the environment and genetics contribute to its development, and although researchers have made significant progress in identifying genetic risk factors for MS, these variants explain only about 50% of its heritability. Furthermore, lifestyle habits could increase risk as well. For these reasons, MS risk involves a complex interplay among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors; patient history of infection; and outside influences.
